Record Labels - Major/Independent

A Record label is a trademark that is used when associating theirselves with music and music videos. a record label markets the song and artist and assists them with all the aspects of the process of making a song or album, such as the production, distribution, marketing and promotion. Record labels have the financial capabilities to fund all the aspects of the artist to try and make them as successful as possible to make more money.  Record labels also enforce copyright on the artists songs, music videos etc. In recent times copyright is stronger than ever as it is very easy to download artists music for free and upload their music to sites like Youtube.

Record labels can be a variety of different sizes, their are independent labels, small labels or mini labels, and then major labels. The three main major record labels are Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner bros Music Group. These are the biggest Major Record labels and they dominant the music industry.




There are also Major independent labels. These labels are the biggest of the independant records and are owned by the major labels. The main major independent record labels are Columbia, Island, Virgin, RCA and Syco. These labels associate wth a small number of acts by focus is detal on these acts.
